The Borgenson power steering unit is a nice alternative to the original Ford ram style power steering, but does come with some drawbacks. It does not work with a column shift (I have not come up with a solution for this yet) or a stick shift using the original Z-bar. Headers can also be an issue because of the size of the steering box. Another issue is that the steering box is so long that the joint for attaching the steering column is partially inside the car. In this article, I am installing a Borgenson unit in a 64 Falcon wagon which had been converted to a 289/C4 with a floor shift. I am going to show how I do this conversion in 60-65 falcons, as the procedure is the same to address the issues with this installation.
Notice the difference in length between the falcon steering box( with the shaft cut off) and the Borgenson power steering box
The Borgenson power steering box is wider than the falcon steering box, this can be an issue with what exhaust manifolds or headers you are using.
You can see how far the u-joint goes inside the car
These are the pieces for the steering column that I modify to fit. The steering column is a cut down floor shift style steering column, you can use a 1964-66 ford mustang steering column or you can use just the bell and bearing support from a floor shift column to your steering column tube. I make a one piece firewall plate and bracket and clamp to hold the lower part of the steering column. I use
You can see here how far the U-joint is inside the steering column tube. My procedure doesn't require any firewall modifications.
I ground some of the ear off the exhaust manifold for clearance to the steering box.
The steering box alos hits the shock tower in the front. A little dimple with a body hammer gave the steering box some clearance.
I got the power steering pump, brackets, and hoses from Borgenson for 1964-66 mustang V8. Because the falcon is a couple inches shorter in the front the Borgenson kit was made for an additionalcrank pulley being put on the front of the original crank pulley, but because of the fan spacing this is not possible with the falcon.
I used a 260 2 groove crank pulley and cut down the mounting spacers to get the pulleys to line up. This may not be necessary depending on radiator size and water pump/timing cover design that is being used.
